Dave Shallow wins WPT Ireland

Rewind the clock to 2005, and as Dave ‘Dubai’ Shallow collects £7,000 for his 15th place finish at EPT London, poker gets ready to herald a new young star. A lot has happened since then, but Shallow finally lived up to his potential last weekend, seeing of 338 players for his first major title and €222k at WPT Ireland.

Many of the UK’s biggest names had opted for a quick trip to Dublin for last week’s WPT, deciding against the long-haul flight to the PCA. But the likes of Jake Cody, Matt Perrins, Sam Macdonald and Barny Boatman failed to grab a share of the €988k prizepool as Shallow run riot.

Dubai’s not gone completely off the radar since 2005, carving out a healthy living online and staying heavily involved in the UK poker scene. And his performance in Dublin showed all the skill of a hardened vet, with Shallow leading the field for the vast majority of the tournament before eventually beating HitSquad star Charles ‘Chaz’ Chattha heads-up.

Chattha, chasing his first big-money title since last August’s GUKPT Luton, briefly snatched the chip lead from Shallow, but in a set-up final hand, Dubai binked his first WPT when he got it all-in preflop with Queens against Chattha’s nines. The board ran K-K-2-8-3 and poker had its first-ever WPT Ireland winner.

Here’s how the final table finished up:

1. David Shallow €202,680 + $25K WPT Championship Seat
2. Charles Chattha €111,130
3. Ronan Gilligan €74,090
4. Patrik Vestlin €52,600
5. Steve Watts €39,270
