Atlantic City Casinos Turn to Monopoly

Atlantic City casinos are trying to take a page out of the popular board game Monopoly to drum up new business, with Bally’s Atlantic City building a large outdoor replica of the Monopoly board.

Tourists can pose for photos and walk around the green houses, red hotels, and game pieces from Monopoly such as the silver car amd top hat. While the Atlantic City connection to the game is a bit of a stretch, casinos in Atlantic City are doing just that — stretching — and leaving no stone unturned in an effort to drum up business.

Atlantic City is still the second largest area for US casinos behind Las Vegas but it is in danger of losing that distinction to Pennsylvania casinos, which have steadily drawn business away from the 11 casinos in AC.

Don Marrandino of Caesars — which owns four Atlantic City casinos including Bally’s — said it has seen an uptick in business since the Monopoly board went up September 1. The board is tied in to a Monopoly-themed promotion inside the casino which can potentially award a jackpot of $500,000 to one lucky winner.

It’s been a particularly rough few months for AC casinos, with August being one of the worst months on record due to forced closures related to Hurricane Irene, while overall revenues in 2011 have shown a slow steady decline as well.
