Tournament: Bad beats and blowups at Bucharest World Poker Tour Event

March 31, 2010 Leave a comment

The World Poker Tour made its first visit to Eastern Europe this week for its inaugural event in Bucharest, Romania. The Main Event, a tournament with a €3,000 (US$3,750) buy-in featured more than one hundred sixty players, for a total prize pool of €449,450 (US$562,000) and a top prize of over €125,000 (US$156,250). The field features many of the top players in Europe; including recent WPT champion Carlos Mortensen.

The tournament action at the Novotel Bucharest City Center Hotel was not the only newsworthy event to happen at the no-limit Texas Holdem tables. A relative of the owner of a popular local soccer team showed his frustration at the proceedings. Giovanni Becali, a soccer agent and cousin of the owner of the Bucharest soccer club Steaua, yelled out after a floor ruling went against him. He tossed his chips in the air and advanced on a poker room tournament director as if he was going to throw a punch.

Watch the video here:

Becali, who has had a history of public outbursts and offensive remarks, stormed out of the hotel ballroom. He did not respond to calls for interviews and has yet to apologize for his unsportsmanlike behavior. The tournament staff gathered up the thrown chips and resumed play after Becali left.

In other poker news, a gang in Austin, Texas robbed a home poker game using many of the same methods as those who raided the European Poker Tour event in Berlin earlier this month. Robbers fired guns in the air and stole the cash on the table, as well as wallets, cell phones and cash from the players.

Police already have one suspect in custody on charges of felony credit card abuse after he tried to use a player’s stolen credit card. According to news reports, each player only carried $200 or $300 in cash for the game, with only ten to twelve players in attendance at the modest home game.

Tournament: Carlos Mortensen wins Hollywood WPT Event

March 29, 2010 Leave a comment

Former World Series of Poker Main Event champion Carlos Mortesen won his third World Poker Tour title this week at the Hollywood Poker Open in Lawrenceburg, Indiana.

Mortensen defeated a field of one hundred and forty players, each paying the US$10,000 buy-in, to take home almost US$400,000 in prize money. He is also eligible for a free seat to the US$25,000 WPT Championship held at the Bellagio casino on the Las Vegas Strip later this spring.

Mortensen had a small chip lead going into his heads-up match with Mike Mustafa, but he took a huge lead during the match when he went all-in while holding the eight of hearts and seven of clubs. The flop gave him the top straight with the ten of diamonds, nine of diamonds and six of spades for the ten-high straight. Mustafa called with two pair, tens and nines, and was left with only a few chips.

On the last hand, Mortensen raised Mustafa all-in. Mustafa called with a pair of red sixes as Mortensen showed the king of clubs and the ten of diamonds. Mortensen paired his ten on the flop and also flopped a flush draw, leaving Mustafa with only one out, the six of spades. When the five of clubs came on the river, the tournament was over and Mustafa had to settle for second place and US$223,623 in winnings.

Mortensen’s win marks a milestone in World Poker Tour history. His three WPT wins matches Gus "The Great Dane" Hansen for the most career victories. He now sits atop the tour’s all-time money list with US$5.7 million, just US$200,000 more than former WPT Player of the Year Daniel Negreanu. His win at the 2005 WPT Championship accounts for nearly US$4 million of that total, and he stands as the only player in history to win both the WPT Championship and the World Series of Poker No-Limit Hold’em World Championship.

Tournament: Binh Nguyen wins Manila APPT Main Event

March 28, 2010 Leave a comment

Las Vegas resident Binh Nguyen had to travel a long way to win his first major poker tournament title, but he believes it was worth the trip. Last year, he came up short of winning the World Poker Tour LA Poker Classic, taking home nearly US$1 million as he finished second behind Cornel Andrew Cimpan. This year, he earned his first victory at the Asia-Pacific Poker Tour event in Manila, Philippines.

Nguyen (no relation to former World Series of Poker Main Event Champion Thuan "Scotty" Nguyen) defeated a field of more than four hundred players, including notable poker pros Barry Greenstein, Nam Le and David "Chino" Rheem. Each player put up US$2,700 to play in the no-limit Texas Hold’em tournament, creating a prize pool of over US$1 million for the event and a first prize of US$260,000.

In addition to the first-prize money, Nguyen also took home the PAGCOR Chairman’s Cup. PAGCOR (Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation) is the corporation, owned by the Philippine government, which controls and regulates casino gaming on the island chain. PAGCO, along with online poker giant PokerStars.Net, sponsored the event. PokerStars also sponsors other events on the Asia-Pacific Poker Tour as well as other regional poker tournament series.

Nguyen entered the final table in sixth place with 660,000 chips, only 100,000 more than the short stack. The chip leader at the final table, Singapore native Choon Kwang Lim, started with nearly 1.9 million chips. Lim lost most of his chips early in the day when his ten-high flush lost to a king-high flush. Lim finished in sixth place to earn US$44,300.

At the start of heads-up play, Nguyen had a three-to-one chip lead on Englishman Gordon Huntly. Huntly moved all-in before the flop with the king of hearts and queen of clubs. Nguyen called the raise with a pair of sevens. When the board failed to show a card higher than a nine, Nguyen’s medium pair held up, earning him his first career title.
