Blotter: Online poker site buys WSOP bracelet on eBay

January 31, 2010 Leave a comment

CakePoker.com, a major online poker site, announced that they had purchased one of the World Series of Poker championship bracelets won by poker legend TJ Cloutier from an eBay auction earlier this week. Mr. Cloutier earned the bracelet when he won the US$5,000 buy-in no-limit hold’em even at the 2005 WSOP.

Executives with CakePoker.com announced that they would return the bracelet to Mr. Cloutier within the next few days. CakePoker.com also operates on the same online poker network as DoylesRoom.com, the site that Mr. Cloutier and other long-time poker legends endorse.

In a recent interview, Mr. Cloutier acknowledged that, in addition to poker, his favorite casino game is craps. He also mentioned "the hard part" of the game "is walking away with your money". When the eBay auctions of his WSOP bracelet, as well a bracelet he won at the 2007 Scotty Nguyen Poker Challenge in Oklahoma, came to the attention of the poker establishment, the news caused concerns over Mr. Cloutier’s long-established losses at craps games in and around Las Vegas.

Mr. Cloutier acknowledged that the bracelets in the auction were his and that he "was short" on cash, but would not elaborate on how a player with more than US$10 million in career winnings reached such a state. He said that he had pawned the bracelets at a pawnshop near Dallas, Texas, and tried to repurchase them with his pawn ticket, "but I was too late". When Mr. Cloutier did not arrive on time with the ticket and the money to repurchase the bracelets, the pawnshop began the auction process.

The winning bid for the WSOP bracelet was slightly more than US$4,000, while the winning bid on the Scotty Nguyen Poker Challenge bracelet was just over US$2,500. CakePoker.com officials posted a message on their website stating that they could not "in good conscience" hold on to the bracelet and promised to return it to Mr. Cloutier "after we’ve had some fun with it"

Tournament: Hoyt Corkins wins Southern Poker Championship

January 31, 2010 Leave a comment

Hoyt Corkins, the poker pro easily identifiable by his black cowboy hat, sunglasses and quiet demeanor, took down the second World Poker Tour title of his career when he defeated young pro Jonathan Kantor at the US$10,000 buy-in Southern Poker Championship and added another US$739,486 to his career tournament winnings. Mr. Corkins has been a staple during the eight seasons of the WPT. His victory at the Beau Rivage casino in Biloxi, Mississippi, was his fourteenth cash and his fifth final table since the series started in 2002.

Mr. Corkins led the final table with just over two million chips, while his closest competitor, young online pro Tyler "tydean" Smith, was seated to his left with less than 1.2 million. Mr. Smith was quickly eliminated in sixth place, taking home US$86,837, as Mr. Corkins demolished the field with his huge chip lead. He eliminated Mr. Kantor when his Ace-seven held up against Mr. Kantor’s King-ten when an ace flopped, giving Mr. Corkins top pair and the title.

With his success on the WPT, Mr. Corkins, known as the "Alabama Cowboy" because of his trademark black Stetson hat, has earned over US$5 million in total tournament winnings, including US$3.3 million from WPT events. He won his first WPT tournament at the World Poker Finals at Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut in November 2003, earning just over US$1 million. He also made three other final tables, finishing third at the Legends of Poker in 2006, second in the 2008 World Poker Open and sixth at the 2008 Doyle Brunson Classic.

His win in Mississippi puts the Alabaman into some prestigious poker company. He is among only a few players to win at least two WPT titles, including Erick Lindgren, Daniel Negreanu and Gus Hansen. He is also one of a handful of players to win both two WPT titles and two World Series of Poker bracelets.

Apple iPad Could Revolutionise Online Casino Games

January 30, 2010 Leave a comment

The Apple iPad was introduced to the world this week and not only is it the best gadget we’ve seen in recent years which could impact your life; it could also have a huge impact on the world of online gambling.

The iPad is best described as a large iPod Touch. Steve Jobs described it as, “So much more intimate than a laptop and so much more capable than a smart phone.”

The iPad will be available worldwide at the end of the month costing around £308. It is designed to do things better than smart phone and laptops including: sharing pictures, watching video, and working with email, reading ebooks and browsing the web. It is the latter function that should get the online gambling industry mostly excited.

Currently if a person wants to play online casino games they must use a desktop, laptop or smart phone. The Apple iPad could change all of that giving players the chance to curl up with their device and play games at instant casinos which use regular web browsers (e.g. virgin casino) rather than software that must be downloaded.

Gambling software developers may decide to create games specifically designed for the Multi-Touch screen technology of the Apple iPad. For example, you could slide chips to the relevant area of the blackjack table to place bets, or shoot your own dice when playing craps with a quick sweep of the finger.

It isn’t often that a new device is introduced which has the potential to revolutionise an industry. It is certainly possible that the Apple iPad could have a positive impact on the way we play online games in the future.

January 28, 2010 Leave a comment

After nearly a year of television commercials featuring Dom Joly, and the chance for everyone to win a life changing jackpot of £8,888,888, it looks like the Pirate’s treasure is still safe.  As yet, no one has found the ‘X’ that marks the spot!

The offer remains the same: all a player has to do is sign up and register with 888 Casino and they are then offered three free spins on the special Pirates Millions online slot. If the player gets very – very – lucky, the spin will land on the jackpot and the player will win the largest slots jackpot in the history of online gambling – a mind-blowing £8,888,888.

The advertising campaign has been a huge success with thousands of people signing up and giving the slots game a spin.

“I have never before gambled on an online slots machine,” said 888 Casino debutante Deborah Cullen. “I saw the television commercial and thought it was worth a punt. I registered, downloaded the software, and had my three spins.

“Unfortunately, I didn’t win but I guess it’s the same as filling in a lottery ticket. Someone, somewhere, will eventually get lucky and win!” She added.

If you still haven’t had your three free spins – what are you waiting for? You have until the end of the month to get lucky. No one has won it as yet!
