Blotter: Poker Hall of Fame Nominations Go Public

May 30, 2009 Leave a comment

Thanks to extensive media coverage of the world’s largest high stakes tournaments, over the last few years poker has become something of a public sport, and (despite all odds) pro poker players have become instant celebrities. You can follow their blogs, read their books, even catch them competing on reality TV. So if millions of screaming tweens can vote on their favorite dancers, singers, and models then why can’t adult poker fans vote on their favorite pros? Now they can.

This week the people at WSOP kicked off their 40th Annual World Series of Poker with a few special announcements. The instant gratification offered by online poker and online poker news has spoiled the at-home crowd, and they’ll no doubt be pleased to hear that this year they’ll even get a say in the Poker Hall of Fame nominations. And who better to decide which names deserve the honor than millions of adoring amateurs and stats stalkers?

If you want to play your part in writing poker history, then you have from the time you read this article until July 2 to nominate a player. If you feel the need to validate your fandom, the form also allows for a 250-word essay. To ensure worthy nominees, the WSOP has released the following criteria:

• Players must have competed against other top players. • Players must compete at the high stakes level. • Players must have a good reputation and a history of wins. • All nominees should be long-term members of the poker community. • Non-player nominations must have made influential changes of long-term significance in the industry.

The Top 10 nominees will be revealed during this year’s Main Event, and the two winners will be announced in a special ceremony at the final table of the Main Event in November.

Blotter: Kentucky Racetracks Plea for Slots Supplementation

May 30, 2009 Leave a comment

With the year’s biggest races behind them, Kentucky’s largest tracks are now looking toward the future, and the view is a grim one. Profits have been slipping at the tracks for several years, and the recent economic downturn has hit this segment of the gambling industry especially hard.

Kentucky has long been recognized as the heart of horse racing, and the sport generates a great deal of income for the state; an income that is subsidized by the many breeders and trainers that have made the Bluegrass State their home. Historically, the racetracks have been all about the horses and the state has been quick to emphasize this focus by restricting all other forms of gambling.

Recently this stance has fallen under fire as the Kentucky tracks have lost major action to the slots-subsidized purses offered by neighboring states. Track owners fear that the aforementioned breeders and trainers could also follow the cash across state lines, resulting in bigger losses across the board.

Last week, six of the state’s most notable racetracks spoke out at an emergency press conference demanding changes in gambling legislation and forecasting the failure of one of the state’s largest industries if these changes aren’t made immediately. First and foremost among the desired changes is a request for the state to expand its gambling legislation to allow the installation of slots and the institution of slots-subsidized purses at Kentucky’s racetracks.

Bob Evans, the current CEO of Churchill Downs, punctuated the urgency of the plea by stating, “We can’t wait any longer.” Already 11 of the states nearest to Kentucky offer some other form of trackside betting, and many others are expected to follow within the next year. “When that happens…look out,” Evans warned.

The press conference was just the beginning. This week, a series of radio ads will hit the air in an effort to rally public support for the motion, and these ads will be further supplemented by a mass mailing campaign that is expected to reach over 250,000 Kentucky homes.

State Governor Steve Beshear has already pledged his support, and a previous House proposal for video slots is under new consideration.

AsianLogic to delist from stock exchange

May 29, 2009 Leave a comment

The Asia-facing online gambling group AsianLogic plc, which was accepted on to the London AIM stock exchange at the end of 2007, plans to delist as soon as it has the approval of 75% of its shareholders, the company announced this week.

The company has already secured irrevocable undertakings from shareholders representing 63.67% of the issued capital of the company to vote in favour of the proposal, the Proactive Investor website reports.

AsianLogic listed on AIM in December 2007 after successfully raising £40.7 million net of proceeds through placing 48.5 million shares at 111.6 pence per share. At the close of trade yesterday the company’s shares were trading at 22.5 pence.

The company owns and operates online casinos and poker rooms plus additional sports book venues through the Mega Sports World brand.

A company statement said that the delisting decision had been taken due to low trading volumes in the shares, and that it hopes to complete the delisting by July 3rd 2009.

The company is offering to buy its shares back at 25p, an 11.1% premium on the current price, and is budgeting almost £17 million to effect this.

“The market is not reflecting the value in the company or the growth opportunities it will enjoy as it refocuses on higher margin business and deposit accounts,” a company spokesman said. “The first year of trading was positive but 2008 proved difficult.

“The board and management of Asian Logic are offering shareholders the possibility of enjoying the future growth of the company, but if (they) don’t want to carry over into the private company, they are still getting a premium on the shares.”

Business: Harrah’s Steps Up Their WSOP Promotions Under a New Title

May 28, 2009 Leave a comment

Before the weekend, legendary gambling franchise Harrah’s Entertainment announced that they will be expanding their online brand through a new business venture working under the title of “Harrah’s Interactive Entertainment.”

HIE has been charged with the maintenance, promotion and expansion of the already wildly popular World Series of Poker. As most poker fanatics already know the WSOP has been growing at an amazing rate, quadrupling their event participation in less than five years. The WSOP Main Event held in Las Vegas every year has long offered one of the largest—if not THE largest—cash tournament prizes in the poker industry. Just two years ago the WSOP added a European branch to the brand and true to the trends WSOP Europe has also experienced significant early success.

It was the keen interest of an international audience that inspired the formation of Harrah’s Interactive Entertainment. Heading the new group is none other than Party Poker alum and former Party Gaming CEO Mitch Garber. Jeffrey Pollack, already a familiar face in WSOP operations, will now step in as President of the new organization and pull double duty while retaining his position as WSOP Commissioner through 2009.

With the introduction of such a net-savvy staff, the online poker boards are buzzing with rumors that Harrah’s will soon expand their interests to online gambling. We can only hope!
